Since graduating college, I’ve mostly avoided romance novels set in high school or college, especially ones where the plot leans heavily on a physical relationship. Honestly, I can’t wrap my head around fawning over a “sex god” who’s like 20. But, safe to say, I caved this month. Partly out of boredom and partly because I’d spent like five dollars on this ebook years ago and never read it.
Shockingly… I actually liked The Deal! It’s funny, clever, and manages to make the college setting feel more about character growth and friendship than just hookups. It’s a solid reminder that even when you think a book isn’t for you, a good story can still pull you in.
The Deal by Elle Kennedy is a college hockey romance following Hannah and Garrett. Hannah is focused and independent, while Garrett is charming but struggling in their ethics class and needs to pass to stay on the hockey team. When he repeatedly asks for her help, Hannah initially refuses, but they eventually strike a deal: she will tutor him if he helps her get the attention of her crush on the football team.
What I loved most about this book is the way it handles the “enemies to friends to lovers” dynamic. Hannah starts out finding Garrett annoying, but his persistence and humor gradually break through her walls, allowing a genuine friendship to form. Their fake dating arrangement adds a fun layer of tension and comedy, but it’s the authentic connection they develop that makes the romance feel real and satisfying.
Garrett and Hannah were really protective of each other while friends, even before anything else evolved it was nice seeing them built that relationship. I love that he was respectful and there wasn’t this big miscommunication fall out, but still had the right amount of drama
This book is perfect for readers who enjoy witty banter, slow-burning relationships, and a romance that evolves from friendship and mutual respect.
